Rome Fight For Gold: Slot Overview

Come with software provider Foxium as it transports willing participants from one circus to another, sort of. In less esoteric terms, this means the studio has reskinned one of its previous games, The Great Albini 2, and given it an Ancient Rome makeover. So, where once players took their seats in a theatre to watch a magician work their magic on stage, they now get an emperor's view of one of the most violent spectacles on earth in a Roman arena. Aside from the view change, and the accompanying new sound effects, the rest has basically stayed the same, where features include Coin collects in the base game and a hold & win bonus round.

Non-mobile gamblers will be happy to know Foxium has expanded the view for Rome Fight For Gold. The Great Albini 2 did that mobile focus thing, where, if you were playing on a larger screen than a handheld, the active gaming area was squished into a narrow rectangular space in the middle. It's still a little unclear why developers sometimes do this, as it lessens the experience on a larger screen. Anyway, it's gone, so players can enjoy a fuller view of an arena, presumably the Colosseum, from a private box, surrounded by crowds, columns, and thick red drapes. Interestingly, there's nothing happening on the actual sand, so it didn't feel as dangerous as, say, Tiger's Glory Ultra, more like Rome The Golden Age in atmosphere, though the music adds some drama.

As mentioned, Rome Fight For Gold can be played and clearly seen on any device while taking bets of 20 p/c to $/€24 per spin. Or, you can click the Boost button, which increases the stake by 50% whilst also increasing the number of coins in the base game, offers greater average coin rewards, and collect symbol multipliers. The chance of hitting Helena and Antonius symbols in the bonus round also increases. It doesn't say if the Boost function affects RTP, where values come in four settings - 96.1% being the default model.

Medium volatile and with a hit rate of 27.19%, winning combinations can land on any of the 40 fixed paylines across a grid made up of 5-reels and 4-rows of symbols. Starting with the 10-A royals as the lows, these symbols pay 1 to 2 times the stake for a five-of-a-kind hit, while the high pay shield, helmet, Helena, and Antonius symbols are worth 3 to 10 times the bet for five-of-a-kind. Wild symbols are present on all reels, too, and are worth 25x the bet for a line of five wilds, or they can replace any regular pay symbol to complete winning lines.

Rome Fight For Gold: Slot Features

Rome Fight For Gold slot - Boost feature

Rome Fight For Gold's features are divided between the base game, where coin symbols may be collected, and a bonus game which flips the action to a hold & win style round.

Collect Feature

Coins appear on reels 1 to 4 at random, bearing bet multiplier values. When a Collect symbol lands on the rightmost reel, it awards the total value of any Coins symbols in view. The three types of Coins are Bronze, Silver, and Gold, carrying values of 1-9x the bet, 10-20x the bet, or 25-50x the bet, respectively. Collect symbols may also have an x2 – x5 multiplier. If it does, the multiplier is applied to the total value of any Coins collected.

Bonus Feature

Scatter symbols appear on reels 2, 3, and 4 in the base game. Landing 3 of them awards the Bonus feature. For the bonus, 3 spins are awarded where Coins, Antonius multipliers, or Helena Extra Spins symbols may land. Coins remain sticky until the feature ends, and Bronze coins award 1-5x the bet, Silver Coins award 10x or 20x the bet, while Gold Coins award 50x the bet. When Coin symbols land, they lock in place and reset the spin count to 3. When spins end, the value of landed Coins is added, any multiplier applied, and the total awarded. The round also ends if all positions are filled.

The Antonius multiplier symbols have values of 1x – 5x, which is added to the multiplier. The multiplier starts at x1 and is applied to the total value of the Coins at the end. Helena Extra Spin symbols increase the reset value of the spin count by +1. Neither of these symbols stick to the grid, but they both reset the spin count when they land.

Rome Fight For Gold: Slot Verdict

In some ways, Rome Fight For Gold is an improvement over The Great Albini 2; in other ways, it's basically the same. One improvement is that non-mobile users can more easily see what's going on, so they are unlikely to have to squint or pull out a magnifying glass to make out all the details. Structures like the Colosseum are some of the most impressive buildings constructed by the Ancient Romans and still have the power to impress even today in a world bristling with colossal glass monoliths. The Colosseum could pack in tens of thousands of people, and ramming all that into a minute square on a PC screen would have felt off.

Fortunately, Foxium hasn't done that, instead letting Rome Fight For Gold take up as much space as it likes. Doing so has helped give the game more atmosphere than it probably would have had, and it's fairly immersive though it lacks the burning danger of something like Nero's Fortune, for example. The same goes for its bonus round. Stacking Coins and multipliers can be fun, but on the xylophone scale of hold & win slots, Rome Fight For Gold sits comfortably outside the extreme edges of the bell curve. The two special symbols, Helena and Antonius, stir things up to a degree, but maybe try not to expect a Money Train level of thrills and fireworks. What does boost Rome Fight For Gold's appeal is that filling the grid during the bonus round awards a 20,000x the bet Grand Prize.

It might be interesting to know the max win probability or what the game is capable of producing outside of getting a full bonus screen of Coins. No doubt something considerably less impressive, but the Grand Prize is there, providing an incentive to give Rome Fight For Gold a crack. It's a solid choice for Ancient Rome enthusiasts, and after going toe to toe with it for a while, it was more thumbs up than thumbs down.

Fair

Rome Fight For Gold is a decent option for those in the mood for a Roman-themed hold & win game that is more thumbs up than thumbs down.
